Happy Birthday Baby!

My little boy is 4! Seriously, where has the time gone? He is so precious and I love being with him every single day. Jay was pretty excited about his birthday this year. He had three birthday parties! The first was at his preschool (I have pictures coming). Then we had a family party at home. I made him chicken nuggets, french fries, carrot sticks and red pepper slices accompanied by a variety of dipping sauces. For dessert we had brownies with ice cream and strawberries. After dinner we took Jay bowling.

There's a bowling ally in the mall next to our apartment and Jay loved it. He's been playing Wii Bowling a lot lately, so doing the real thing was pretty exciting. Jay's third party was with all his friends. We had Ray and RJ, Ivan, Josh and Jake, Sophie, Noah and Will, and Francisca and Arago.
(L - R: Francisca, Josh, Ivan, Jay, Noah, Sophie, Ray, Arago, Jake and Will)
Plus all their parents. It was quite a crowd!

We had snacks and cake in our apartment (we were going to have it in the park but it was raining) and then we played games downstairs in the common area. We had planned on playing Duck, Duck Goose and Penny in the Flour but after a few attempts we let in and allowed the kids to just run around screaming, which is what they wanted to do anyway.

We did have a pinata but it wasn't too exciting because the pinatas in Chile have a string you pull to let out all the candy instead of hitting it. The kids did go crazy diving for the candy though!

It was a great birthday. One of these days I'll try to have a theme party for Jay but that will have to happen when we get back to the States. Jay still hasn't had a birthday in the U.S. except for the day he was born :)

We took Jay to the doctor for his 4 year old check up and he weighed 38 pounds and was 41 inches tall. What a big boy! He's in the 50th percentile for height and weight. We entered his info into the Baby Center Height Predictor and he's supposed to be 6 feet tall by the time he's 18. He's on track developmentally too. He LOVES to play games right now. He received several games and puzzles from his grandparents for his birthday including Toy Story Yatzee and Eye Spy. He also loved the puppet making set and Magnadoodle he got from Grandma and the kid digital camera Nonna sent him.

He's definitely a spoiled boy! It's fun playing with him. He and daddy are always wrestling and doing the "rip to the eye" move on each other. They also love to play ball and hide and sneak. They have also been playing Penny on the Flour lately. I'm not sure if it's a game Mike's family made up or what but I've never heard of it before. You put a bowl of flour upside down on a plate and take off the bowl so it leaves a mound of flour. Then you place a penny on top. Each player then takes a turn slicing through the flour with a knife until the penny drops. Whoever looses has to pick of the penny with his mouth. It's pretty funny to watch.

Jay still loves playing cars and trains too. He's picking up on a lot of new things lately. He's trying a lot of the psychology we use on him to get what he wants from us now. For example, the other day we were taking the Metro back from the city center and there were two empty seats. I sat down with him on my lap so someone else could sit in the other chair. He didn't want to sit on my lap so he turned to me and said, "Mom, you can either stand up and hold onto the bar or you can sit in this seat next to me. Those are your choices." I had a hard time keeping a straight face as I  made my choice to sit next to him. So funny! I love my little man and I can't believe he's already 4 years old. I'm so glad he still loves to cuddle me and give me kisses. I hope I still have many years ahead before he's too old for that. I love you baby!!!!

Amaya's 6 months old!

Baby girl turned 6 months on the 18th. I can hardly believe how big she is. We took her to the doctor for her 6 month check up and she was 16.4 pounds and 27 inches tall! She is an adorable chunky little girl. She is in the 60th percentile for weight and the 90th percentile for height. She just started eating cereal and so far it's going pretty well. Check out her first taste:

She is still a very happy girl and she's very active. She's sitting up, rolling around and loves to be on her tummy to look around. She grabs everything in reach and sticks it all in her mouth. She loves to play with her brother, but she's learning to to let him know when he's being too smothering. Unfortunately, she's still not sleeping too well but I've finally broken down and put her on a schedule. Hopefully that will help! I sure love my tiny tiny. She's absolutely beautiful and she's finally starting to grow some hair :) My My we are in love with you!!!

Jay dances at Preschool for Dieziocho

For Dieziocho Jay's preschool class put on a little traditional Chilean show for the parents. He got all dressed up and danced around like a little Chilean boy. He was SO adorable.

Here's Jay showing off some of the art he's made in school lately for the Dieziocho.

Here's Jay with his little dance partner. So cute!

So I have to tell a story about this:

One day I dropped Jay off at school and his teacher asked me if I had received an e-mail about decorating a hat for school. I told her I wasn't sure and I would check. When I got home I looked through my e-mails and couldn't find the one she was talking about. We called the school to find out more (around 4 pm) and the director told us the kids needed to bring a hat to school that they had decorated... the next day. Let me put this into perspective. We have nothing here. We have no paint, no glitter, no construction paper, no crafts of any kind. We don't even have glue or tape! So "decorating" a hat (that we didn't even have) was going to be complicated. Unfortunately the day got busy and we put it out of our minds until about 9 pm when I said, "Mike! Jay is supposed to bring that hat to school tomorrow that he's decorated!" Jay was already in bed. So what did we do? We started to think. The only hat we had for Jay was a Spiderman beanie we bought off the street near the Plaza de Armas. I suggested we could cut shapes out of cardboard, cover them with tinfoil and stick them on the hat. The problem? No glue, no tape. Okay. Maybe we could stick them on with twist ties? Nope, we only had 2. What were we going to do? We started rummaging through drawers trying to figure something out. Finally we found some black thread and a needle. Jackpot! Then we found this funny clacker bracelet Grandma had sent Jay. It's rubber with small rubber tubes coming out all over and colored plastic balls on the ends. When you twist it around the small balls clack together. So we took that bracelet, cut off all the tubes with balls on the ends and sewed them to the Spiderman hat. This was the result:

We knew it was pretty lame. But when I showed up at school with it the next day and I saw the other kids with these hats:
I was pretty embarrassed! Ha ha ha... oh well. Then they displayed them at this parent open house. Good thing none of them had names next to them! We snatched ours right up and stuffed it in my purse :) I guess we're "those" parents now. Oh well, what can you do??

Dieziocho en Vina del Mar

Chile celebrated their 200th year of freedom over the weekend. Sort of like our fourth of July they call it "El Dieciocho." Mike had to do a little work for the celebration on the coast in Vina del Mar so we followed him down. We had a blast! The weather was perfect and the kids loved the beach, especially Jay. We stayed in a beautiful apartment we found on vrbo.com right across from the ocean and a park with gorgeous views. On the night of the 18th we had a perfect view of the fireworks from our balcony.

Playing in the waves:

There was a little carnival going on in Vina as well so we headed over to taste the traditional Chilean food. We had Kabobs, empanadas and choripan (grilled chorizo placed in bread with a special salsa on top). My favorite though was the fresh pineapple and ice cream drink. Yum! Jay loved riding the rides and playing games.

What exactly is this supposed to be in the bouncy castle?

I'm "loving" this new fashion - floral leggins. Is is happening in the States too?? I hope not!

Feliz Diezyocho!
