We made it home and have had a great few days in Nevada City. Our flight over was a very unique experience. We took a military plane (a free hop) all the way from Rota Air Force Base in Spain to Travis Air Force Base in California. It was honestly a much better experience than flying commercial. Of course we got lucky that our flight actually left when it was supposed to and ended up where it was supposed to. We stayed over night at Rota on Thursday night, woke up at 7 Friday morning, drove 5 minutes to the airport, checked in with virtually no line, hung out in the lobby and ate a pancake breakfast, went through a security check (again no line) and hopped onto the airplane. It was amazing! No crowds, no lines, no hassle. It was the perfect way to travel with a toddler. We took a C-17 and it was SO huge. I still cannot believe those planes can get off the ground. When we walked up the steps to get into the plane I did not know what to expect and I was very surprised by what I found. The plane was pretty much empty and it looked so much different than your average commercial airplane. There is no paneling on the inside of the plane so as to make maintenance easier. Apparently these planes are maintained to the best possible degree.It was funny because you can see all the wiring and guts of the plane. The floor was metal and half of it had rollers and tracks on it to fit big tanks onto. The only seats were along the sides of the plane and they pulled down from the side. I felt like I was about to parachute onto enemy territory or something. It really was a once in a lifetime experience. The only reason we could even ride the military hop is because we are stationed overseas at a remote base. Since Mike is a civilian he obviously does not normally get the same privileges as those in the military. It was neat to have this opportunity, not to mention easy on the bank account. On the first leg of our journey there were about 12 people on the plane. On the second flight though we were the only 3! It was great for Jay. He ran around the plane and could spread out on the ground when he wanted to sleep or watch a movie.We all stretched out a few times to take a nap. It was so nice to have all that room! Between flights we even had a chance to go up into the cockpit. Jay thought that was pretty cool. The pilots and staff were really nice. The only sort of bad thing was that the plane was a little colder than a normal plane. We had plenty of clothes and blankets to keep us warm though. We are so happy to be back in the States and have already enjoyed seeing many friends and family.
Today we are off to Utah for 3 weeks of fun. We hope to see many of you there!
Thank you, thank you sweeties for stopping in Cali on your way to Utah. What an unexpected treat to see Mike and of course, our little Roo and baby daughter! We wish you the best time in Utah with family, friends and a little of the Cougars too! I know Jill will spend every waking moment with our precious baby boy and maybe share him with the rest of the family when she is cooking up her lovely dinners! This Thanksgiving I am especially grateful for the wonderful extended family we now have and our very special son-in-law Mike who can do very hard things and who loves his little family with all his heart. I know this sweet family has a loving Heavenly Father watching over them and I am grateful to be able to share my life with them. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We love you a zillion! mom,nona & friend
What a neat experience. I am dreading our flight next week for Thanksgiving. I can not even imagine how fun it was for Jay to be able to run around and play compared to be stuck in a little seat the whole time. Definitely sounds like the way to travel (especially if it is free!).
